Looking for traditional childhood food at stalls or coffee shops these days are hard to come by as most have closed down as the younger generation prefer other forms of work. You would have to scour the back or side lanes of the main roads and here is where you’ll be able to find these stalls and the waft of the smell of these food will take you back in time. Most of these stalls are still served by an elderly man or woman, probably from the 50s and 60s era but there aren’t many of these places nowadays. Here, at this place, you can find Madam Ah Ying or ‘Ah B’ as she is affectionately known and her specialities are her Yong Tau Foo and Loh Shu Fun (rice vermicelli).Yong tau foo, a Hakka Chinese food consisting primarily of tofu that has been filled with either a ground meat mixture or fish paste. Yong tau foo is eaten in numerous ways; either dry with a sauce or served as a soup dish. An assortment of vegetables can be stuffed, including brinjal, bitter gourd, ladies fingers, and chillies. Now…her Loh Shu Fun is another story. Her noodles are 100% hand-made from ground rice flour, which is very rare to find as most are commercially produced and seldom homemade as it is too tedious to make. She took over from her father since 1958 and she continues the heritage ever since at Lorong Petaling, off Jalan Sultan. You can have your bowl of noodles served either in soup or dried (‘kon loh’)with black soya sauce with small pieces of pork meat. She operates daily except Mondays from 8:30am to 3:00pm. Pay her a visit the next time you are in the area and experience the good ol’ days when your grandparents use to enjoy this simple but delicious dishes.
