(Traditional Teochew Porridge & Rice since 1967)
This humble stall, located at Lorong Bandar 5, Off Jalan Sultan, KL, started in 1967 and has been dishing out mouth-watering dishes. The dishes cooked here are from the 60s era where the cooks taste the food by placing a little of the gravy on the palms of their hand and tasting it with their tongue while cooking (just like the old days of how our grandparents use to do it). They serve an array of dishes (30+ dishes) from various types. One of the most sought after is the steamed “tong san” fish, vegetables, eggs to meat. Unfortunately, for those who have the yearning for the “newer” version of mixed rice or “chap fun”, then you would have to head on to the coffee shops…
Nowadays, times have changed and the environment in this area has been affected too. Gone are thedays where you could find families living in the area, atop of shop houses. Progress has taken over and families have moved off for obvious reasons. You can count the number of these stalls at your fingertips but people still flock to these stalls to eat the dishes here and at the same time reminisce the good old days.
Chinese in particular who misses their grandmother’s cooking will come to this stall (one of the few remaining) and eat the various dishes. The owner has lamented that their children will not be taking over the business as it’s a hard and tiring work. The stall operates five day week and closes on Saturdays and Sundays.
So, for those of you who misses food cooked the style that your grandmother used to, head on down to this stall and better still, if your grandparents are around…bring them along and I’m sure it’ll bring fond memories for them and they’ll thank you for it too!
