Petaling Street used to be famous for its Dim Sum and one particular shop, Yoke Woo Heng, used toopen as early as 4:00am to cater for the fish mongers, meat and vegetable sellers at Central Market,which originally was a wet and open market back in the days and was known as KL Central MarketTowards the end of the 1970s, the Malaysian Heritage Society decided to preserve the buildingbut ever since Yoke Woo Heng closed its doors in 2012, there isn’t any traditional tea shop in thearea.Fortunately, there is still one that has withstood the test of time and that is, Teck Kee, adjoining the‘Pasar Karat’. Its founder, Mr.Tan used to work in one of the famous Dim Sum kitchen under his ‘Sifu’and mastered the method of preparing Dim Sum. Business hours starts at 7 pm till the next morningbut 30 years ago, the business hours was changed to the afternoon (from 12:30pm onwards) andthey catered to takeaways only but within an hour or so after opening, these delicacies were soldout! No wonder people affectionately call this place ‘tau pau kitchen’ (‘tau pau’ means takeaway).Patrons will be able to see the variety of Dim Sums being prepared by the experts. So the next timeyou are in the vicinity, pop in to Teck Kee and sample its mouth-watering Dim Sum and see how it’sprepared the traditional way…
