Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that ending Kashmir's special status would restore the disputed region's 'past glory.' He was speaking at Independence Day celebrations in Delhi, marking 72 years since the British Raj was dismantled and divided among India and Pakistan. Tensions are high between the neighboring countries more than a week after the Indian government withdrew the semi-autonomous status of Kashmir. Pakistan also claims the region as its own.
