IN the 1970's and 1980's there were plenty of Diesel powered cars running around, now the majority of diesel's come in full-sized trucks. The diesel market has seen resurgence as of late thanks to the great fuel economy figures of the VW TDI line of cars. Now companies like Chevrolet and Mazda are eager to jump on the diesel bandwagon. The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze has a diesel variant that starts at $24,985.

Under the hood is a Turbocharged Diesel 2.0 liter 4-cylinder EcoTec engine that makes 151 horsepower and 264 lb-ft. of torque. Fuel economy is 27 MPG in the city and 46 MPG on the highway. If you were just driving highway miles, a full tank of gas would last over 700 miles which is a very impressive range. That's also why the Cruze Diesel is a great commuter car.

On the outside the Cruze diesel looks just like the standard Chevrolet Cruze. The car is not flashy rather the designers have opted for a subtle look. The inside continues the subtle theme. The interior is upgraded and updated. There is nothing flashy or exciting. But this is a mileage eater so tons of luxury or high tech is not really necessary.

At its core the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze is a well-built compact car. The Diesel engine adds that high mileage many commuters are wanting.
