Are you ready to improve your English by learning how to use gerunds correctly? Studying! Did you know that ‘studying’ is not only a verb, but that it can also be a noun?!? If I say, “I am studying English” then ‘studying’ is clearly a verb. However in the sentences: “Studying makes me happy” and “ I enjoy studying,” ‘studying’ is being used as a noun because it is a gerund!

So what is a gerund? A gerund is a verb + ing that is used as a noun!

In today’s English lesson you will learn about important grammar rules that you need to know to improve your English and learn how to use gerunds correctly! The following grammar points will be reviewed in today’s grammar lesson:
1. Gerunds as subjects! Gerunds can be the subject of your sentence. If you use a gerund as the subject in a sentence, be sure to use the third person singular form of the verb (this means the verb in the simple present must use an ‘S’ ) For example: Playing video games makes me happy. Listening to music inspires me. Drinking coffee gives me energy. Subscribing to JeN's Jyugyou is a great idea.
2. Gerunds as Objects! Gerunds can be the object of your sentence. For example: Many people dislike exercising. I enjoy singing. It's hard to avoid eating junk food. They finished studying for the test.
3. Negative Gerunds! To make sentences with negative gerunds, just add the word ‘not’ in front of the gerund. For example: The doctors suggested not drinking coffee. Not exercising is unhealthy.

This English lesson will also review the following spelling tips for gerunds in English writing:
1. If the base verb that you're adding -ing to finishes with a consonant, vowel, consonant, then when you are writing the gerund form of the verb, you need to double the final consonant before you add -ing. For example: Running is great exercise. I need to go shopping. In Hawaii I went swimming.
2. If the base verb ends in 'e' before you add -ing, please take away the ‘e'. For example: You should quit smoking. Driving in winter can be difficult.

Final advice from this lesson will help you to avoid getting confused between gerunds and the continuous form of the verb.
