I speak English. He speaks English. We speak English. Did you notice that the verb in the second sentence is different? It has an 's' at the end of the verb because we need to make the subject and the verb agree with each other. The subject and the verb have to match with each other in your sentences. They study English. She studies English.

Subject verb agreement means that the verb you use needs to match your subject correctly. Errors with subject-verb agreement is one of the most common grammar mistakes in English. This English lesson will teach you 10 subject-verb agreement rules and fix your English grammar mistakes!

This grammar lesson contains many example sentences to help you understand how subject verb agreement works in English. The 10 Rules for Subject-Verb Agreement that are taught in this video are:
1. Basic Sentences: Especially in simple present, when the subject is he, she, or it, then the verb needs to end with an ’S’.
2. For verbs ending in O, CH, or SH: You need to add ‘ES’ to the end of verbs used with he, she, or it.
3. Plural only nouns: (pants, sunglasses, headphones, clothes) Although these nouns are talking about a single item, they don’t have a singular form. The verb used with plural only nouns doesn’t have an S.
4. Negative sentences: (isn’t, doesn’t, hasn’t) In negative sentences only the auxiliary verb needs to match with the subject. The verb after the auxiliary verb follows the pattern for whichever verb tense you’re using.
5. Model Verbs: (can, could, will, would, may, might, must, should) Model verbs never change their form no matter what subject they are paired with. After a model verb you must always use the base form of the verb. In other words, you don’t need to worry about subject verb agreement when you use model verbs.
6. And vs. Or: When you join two people together as the subject of your sentence, whether you connect the two using ‘and’ or ‘or’, the meaning of your sentence will change. The verb that you need to use will also change. A and B are speaking means that both A and B are doing the action. The verb doesn’t have an S. A or B is speaking means that maybe A is speaking, or maybe B is speaking, but they are not both speaking. The verb has an S.
7. Gerunds: (Verb + ing) If you use a gerund as the subject of your sentence then your verb must have an S.
8. Non-countable nouns: (coffee, furniture, happiness) These nouns don’t have a plural form because you are unable to count them. If the subject of the sentence is a non-countable noun the verb must have an S.
9. Group nouns / Collective nouns: (team, club, company, family) Although group nouns refer to many people, the verb is the same as the third person singular, the verb will have an S.
10. Indefinite pronouns: (everybody, nobody, anybody, someone) If the subject of the sentence is an indefinite pronoun, then the verb will have an S.
