If you want to improve your writing, it is essential to understand how to use punctuation in English! The 8 types of punctuation in this English punctuation guide include the following. Watch the lesson for examples and for more information on how to use this punctuation in your writing:
1. Period (.) : Periods are used at the ends of sentences. Periods are also used at the ends of abbreviations.
2. Exclamation point (!) : An exclamation point is used at the end of sentences to show strong emotion or to give commands.
3. Question mark (?) : A question mark is used at the ends of questions / interrogative sentences.
4. Comma (,): A comma is used to separate items in a list. Commas are also used before a conjunction in a compound sentence. In addition, they are used to set off an appositive in a sentence. Commas are also used in writing to introduce a quote after using an action verb.
5. Quotation marks (“ ”) : Quotation marks are used in writing around direct quotes.
