Today, we’re featuring Compacts, starting with Mini. Re-tuned by the John Cooper Works performance-engineering division, the Mini John Cooper Works Hardtop features the most powerful engine under the hood in a serial production model, and quite frankly, we love this car. It boasts a 2.0-liter four cylinder TwinPower turbo capable of generating 231 horsepower and 236 lb.-ft. of torque. New features include Brembo brakes, a host of MINI connected technologies, and bold exterior colors. It’s available this spring, starting at $30,600.
Completely redesigned this year and boasting a bigger, lighter, more powerful, and more efficient package, the seventh generation Volkswagen Golf is the nameplate’s best iteration ever. It won the Autobytel 2015 Car of the Year Award for good reason. Buyers can choose between turbo, turbodiesel, and electric powertrains to satisfy virtually any driving preference, while taking advantage of a full roster of technological features. It’s available now, starting at $17,995.
Audi gets it right with the completely new A3 this year, setting the stage for what premium buyers have come to expect from the automaker, including Quattro AWD, the latest Audi connect technology, a high efficiency TDI diesel engine, and top notch styling. Audi plans to launch sportback models some time later this year, however, sales of the A3 are going on now.
The refreshed Toyota Prius C was actually revealed at the LA Auto Show in November, but we definitely wanted to feature it in our Compact segment highlights. The C boasts a slightly revamped front grille and edited taillights. Equipment and interior styling remain virtually the same as last year, as does its powertrain…and that’s great news. Its 99 horsepower 1.5 liter four cylinder Hybrid garners 53 mpg city / 46 mpg highway.
We’re not sure how, but the 2016 Smart FourTwo fits even more content and cabin space into its city-sized dimensions. It’s got a new 88 horsepower three cylinder engine; safety features such as Crosswind Assist; and plenty of gadgets for infotainment lovers, including Bluetooth, smartphone integration, and JBL audio. The Smart FourTwo is all new for 2016, and sales start later this year.
