Today, we’re highlighting Alternative Fuel vehicles, starting with Chevy. The 2016 Chevrolet Volt is the second generation of the Bowtie Brand’s extended-range electric vehicle boasting amped up performance, efficiency, styling, and features. The new version of the Volt features an upgraded next generation Voltec propulsion system with a two-motor electric drive, good for 50 miles of all-electric driving capability, backed by an additional 350 miles from the gas engine, and an estimated 41 mpg in combined travel.
This year’s Hyundai Sonata Hybrid gets a 10 percent jump in fuel efficiency over last year’s version, with EPA estimates in the 42 mpg in combined driving. You get more trunk space too – about 10 percent more – in addition to 75 mph in the all-electric mode. The plug-in model serves up about 22 miles of all-electric driving before the gas engine takes over. Buyers can expect style and tech upgrades in this year’s model.
The Mercedes-Benz C350 Plug-in Hybrid adds battery power to the growing C-Class lineup. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mated to a single electric motor boasts 275 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque, enabling a zero to 60 time in 5.9 seconds. Its lithium-ion battery stores juice to offer 20 miles of electric-only driving at highway speeds. Look for the C350 Plug-in this Fall.
The sporty Volkswagen eGolf features a 115-horsepower electric motor capable of generating 199 lb-ft of torque, and an estimated driving range of about 90 miles. Complete recharging of the eGolf’s battery takes about four hours, but that time can be shortened dramatically using the DC fast charger which can pump out an 80 percent charge in about 30 minutes. Lots of nice standard features here, including LED headlights, touch screen nav, and heated front seats.
Running solely on hydrogen and emitting only water vapor, the 2015 Honda FCV Concept sets the stage for a new production model that boasts the brand’s latest efficiency strategy. It also showcases ultra-aerodynamic and futuristic design cues. It boasts a driving range of 300 miles, and a re-fueling time of about three minutes. The number of hydrogen refueling stations are expected to increase in the key California market. Look for the FCV next year.
