Somalia is suffering from attacks by the jihadist militia, al-Shabab. The latest attacks happened in and around the capital of Mogadishu, where an Italian military convoy narrowly escaped an explosion from a suicide car bomber. Civilian injuries were reported, but no casualties. Al-Shabab militants also carried out a separate, major attack on a military airbase used by US forces located a hundred kilometers to the northwest, which Somali officals say they were able to repell.
In the past three months alone Al Shabaab has carried out several major attacks. In July, a suicide bombing in Mogadishu killed the city's mayor inside his office.
A few days later the group targeted a popular hotel in the usually safe town of Kismayo. Then, just little over a week ago they raided the El-Salin military base, killing more than twenty Somali soldiers.
