In Venezuela, a high-ranking military officer threw his support behind parliamentary leader and self-declared Interim President Juan Guaido, as tens of thousands of Venezuelan protesters attended rival rallies for Guaido and sitting President Nicolas Maduro in a political standoff with no resolution in sight. Guaido called on supporters to stay in the streets until Maduro steps down, but Maduro still enjoys strong support from his base, which celebrated the 20th anniversary of their coming to power with Hugo Chavez.
