The Hazara people in Pakistan live day to day under the threat of violence and discrimination. Originally native to the mountains of central Afghanistan, the mostly Shiite Hazaras are considered heretics by Sunni Muslim extremists. For years, hundreds of thousands of Hazaras have been hemmed into enclaves cordoned off by checkpoints and armed guards designed to protect them from violent militants. But the security measures have not ended attacks. Over the past five years, more than 500 Hazara have been killed in Pakistan.
