Total world military expenditure rose to $1,822 billion in 2018, representing an increase of 2.6 per cent from 2017, according to new data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Much of that inrease is driven by the United States, which in 2018 spent almost as much on its military as the next eight countries combined. But China and Eastern European countries are also spending more on their national defense, as well. Germany ranked eighth overall, spending 1.2% of GDP on military expenditures last year.
