An attack on a military base in central Afghanistan has killed scores of people. The Taliban claimed responsibility, but there are conflicting reports about the number of people who were actually killed, ranging from at least 12, to more than 120. Officials say a suicide bomber detonated a vehicle packed with explosives, after which four other attackers opened fire. The attack happened in Maidan Shahr in Wardak province, around 50 kilometres south of the capital Kabul. The violence comes as the United States is stepping up its efforts to find a negotiated end to the country's 17-year war.
