The US and the Islamist Taliban militia are blaming each other for the collapse of Afghanistan peace talks, after Donald Trump abruptly canceled a planned secret summit with the insurgents near Washington. The two sides had been holding weeks of lower-level talks in Doha to seek an end to Afghanistan's decades of conflict. Trump broke off those talks. He tweeted that he scrapped the secret meeting after the Taliban claimed responsibility for a car-bomb in Kabul that killed a dozen people, including an American soldier. The Taliban said the decision will harm the US more than anyone else, but seemed to leave the door open to more talks. The US and the Taliban have been meeting since last year. Trump has pledged to withdraw the remaining 14,000 US troops from Afghanistan, but faces resistance from the Afghan government and US lawmakers who say it's too early to leave the Afghans on their own.
