In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Christine Mahoney is an Associate Professor of Politics and Public Policy at the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia. She studies social justice advocacy, activism and direct action through social entrepreneurship. After years of research in refugee camps in conflict zones around the world, she has seen the limits of activism and become increasingly convinced that direct action through social entrepreneurship will result in improved outcomes for the forcibly displaced specifically and those living in extreme poverty more generally. Christine sailed as a Semester at Sea student in spring 1999 and will sail as a faculty member on the Spring 2014 50th Anniversary voyage, leading the new Social EntrepreneurSHIP program.
