For 20 years Honda has been telling us the American car market can’t have the Civic Type R model. But for the 2017 model year the Honda Civic Type R is finally here with a base price of $33,900. Just one look at the new Type R will tell you this is no ordinary Civic.
The first thing you notice is the factory red badging that has been reserved for only the Type R models. Up front the Type R is fitted with a chin spoiler, functional hood scoop, and functional venting in the bumper. The 20-inch wheels are gloss black and wrapped in low-profile Continental Sport tires. Behind the wheels are some serious braking hardware in the form of Brembo 4-piston calipers and drilled rotors. Out back the air flows past the rear diffuser and wing to add downforce.
Under the hood is the most powerful production motor ever fitted in a Honda. The 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine makes 306 horsepower 295 lb-ft. of torque. The transmission is a 6-speed manual.
