The wilderness of the Sierra Morena in Spain is one of the last remaining refuges of the Iberian lynx. Originally, the cat dominated the region, but as trends grew and agriculture spread, the lynx population was forced into smaller areas. With the loss of habitat, the lynx population plummeted to 100 individuals. Today, the Iberian lynx is one of the most endangered species on the planet, but a breeding program launched in 2002 has made strides in getting the cats back on track. Project members must humanely trap the wild lynx, and bring them in for the captive breeding program. Once they have kittens, the young cats must learn to hunt their own meals if they are to survive.
