Europe may seem an unlikely home for large wild cats, yet its forests, mountains, and islands harbor a variety of felines that have adapted to human presence. Among them is the Iberian lynx, the largest of its kind, found in Spain, where a male and female navigate their overlapping territories and communicate through scent markings before mating and raising their young in an abandoned barn. Meanwhile, in the Canary Islands, domestic cats turn feral during mating season, including a red female who ventures out to mate, only to face an erupting volcano on her return. Lastly, the European wildcat, once widespread, now survives in the forests of eastern France after facing threats from hunting and habitat loss. Here, a female raises her three kittens, teaching them to hunt instinctively as conservation efforts combat hybridization with domestic cats.
