There are few bands as iconic as The Who. But while The Who's music has brought joy to countless millions, the band members' journeys to legendary status has been besieged by shocking and unexpected deaths, public disasters, violence, and destruction. Here is the tragic real-life story of The Who.

Young Pete Townshend spent the first few years of his life in a West London area hit hard by German bombing raids in World War II, which ended just a few months after he was born in 1945. Death permeated daily life. He told the Daily Telegraph,

"When I was four I lived in a house where 12 people had died. We played in bomb sites, we'd find bits of bodies, skeletons, and watches every day."

When he was five, Townshend's parents split up and for two years he was forced to live with his psychologically disturbed grandmother, which he described to Rolling Stone as, quote, "a f---ing nightmare."

And things were tough for bandmate Roger Daltrey as well. In 1959, he was expelled from school on his 15th birthday after a long history of fighting and causing trouble culminated in an incident where he brought an air rifle to school. Another student grabbed the gun and fired it, putting out a kid's eye, and ending Daltrey's schooling.

And you thought that sort of thing was just an urban legend!
