Rowing evangelist Erin Martin describes how she "plays" by rowing on the Passaic River for fun and fitness. Erin has worked as a reporter for The Hartford Courant and a press secretary and speechwriter for US Senator Christopher J. Dodd. Erin lived in post-apartheid South Africa and Namibia for seven years, managing US government-funded democracy and governance programs. In 2011, she co-authored Fit to Serve with James C. Hormel, a member of the Minnesota meatpacking family who became America's first openly gay US ambassador.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
