Fifty people have been confirmed dead after a right-wing terrorist attack on two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch. The suspected gunman, Australian right-wing terrorist Brenton Tarrant, has been charged with murder. New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern promised Muslim communities in Christchurch that mosques will receive police protection and victims and their loved ones will receive financial support for funeral expenses. The country's worst-ever mass shooting has left New Zealanders grappling with questions of how to prevent such occurrences in the future and how to implement gun control in a country with otherwise lax gun laws.
