In what is New Zealand's worst peacetime mass killing ever, a gunman killed 49 people at two mosques in the city of Christchurch. Dozens more were injured. New Zealanders have gathered to mourn the victims and show solidarity with the survivors. But the event has also been a blow to the country's image of itself. Now the hard work begins on taking a hard look at the spread of Islamophobia, racism and white supremacism in New Zealand, and at the country's gun laws and how tighter gun laws might prevent a similar tragedy in the future.
