Hong Kong's chief executive Carrie Lam has announced that a highly controversial bill that would have allowed extraditions to the Chinese mainland is "dead." The pro-Beijing leader described the government's work on the bill as a "total failure." But she stopped short of saying she would give in to protester demands and withdraw the proposal from the table. Hundreds of thousands of people have protested against the law in the territory over the past month.
