Don Quixote of the jungle (part 5)

The Amazon of the year 2000 still holds enclaves like this one, the native village of the Matis indians who work with Sydney Possuelo. Their contact with our world has been complete, but they decide what it should be like, the rhythm and rate at which they bring their step in time with ours. Our civilized society waits for no one, not even for us; it would be naïve to think otherwise.

That is the principle that has moved Sydney all his life...that they, the indians, decide for themselves, that they take their own time, that they not succumb, defenseless to the arrogant machinations of our modern society.

The fearsome Korubo are now his friends, and Sydney wants all of his people, whether indians or not, to embrace one another. The policy followed by the department Possuelo directs is that of avoiding contact at all costs. Contact should only take place when the situation is dire. Unfortunately for the Korubo, it was dire, and now with their new allies they can face the future with greater security; they are no longer alone.

Possuelo's biological family blends with this other family. We are all brothers, and despite our cultural differences, we belong to the same tribe.

For the time being, our friend Possuelo is leaving, but the Korubo, theWitxombó, are not alone. They have met the kind face of the white man and that calms them: although they should never let their guard down.
