The American alligator is an opportunistic feeder and will eat mostly animal it’s capable to overpower. Fish belong to the alligators main diet, which are easy to catch and swallow for the most part. But often, alligators hunt prey way to large for it to be swallowed. Hence, the alligator will use different techniques to reduce its prey to smaller, bite size pieces, such as slapping the prey onto the water surface or stashing it for a few days until the decaying flash will be easier to split. In this video, an alligator hatchling caught a fish, which is too large for it to swallow. The hatchling tried to rip the fish into smaller pieces but the commotion only attacked a larger alligator hatchling, which eventually eat the whole fish in one piece after many unsuccessful attempts.
