American Alligators are mostly nocturnal ambush predators but the morning hours offer yet another chance to catch easy prey before resting throughout the day. Once an alligator reaches adulthood, any animal living in or near the water is potential prey, including large turtles.
Softshell turtles are preyed on by many predators but the american alligator remains its number one enemy. The teeth of an alligator are designed to grip prey with a bite force of 2000 psi therefore the alligator has little difficulties biting though the turtle’s leathery carapace.
But crocodilians can not chew flesh such as canids or other meat eaters. They usually rip junks of flash out of their prey by viciously slapping it onto the water’s surface. Such commotion certainly attack other alligators, eager to joint in on a free meal. The stock footage was filmed by Heiko Kiera aka Ojatro in 2017.
