During the Alligator mating season it is common for the dominant male to attack other male alligators and chase them out of his territory. Some male alligators will even be killed during such confrontations… and it won’t take long for black vultures to find and feed on the carcass.
The American Black Vulture is a scavenger and feeds mainly on carrion such as road kill. This dog was hit by a car and died shortly after from its injuries. It will only take a few hours for the vultures to make the carcass disappear. These birds will also eat eggs or kill newborn animals including newborn calves. It is the only species of New World vulture which preys on livestock such as cattle. Black vultures occasionally harass cows which are giving birth, but primarily preys on their newborn calves. In its first few weeks, a calf will allow vultures to approach it. The vultures swarm the calf in a group, then peck at the calf's eyes, nose or its tongue. The calf then goes into shock and is killed by the vultures shortly after. These birds are very aggressive when feeding, and may even chase the larger Turkey Vulture from carcasses.
