Seat belts are engineered to protect adults. Most kids are not tall enough to have the standard seat belt fit them correctly. That is why a booster seat is so important. Every state in the U.S. has a set of child safety laws which govern how old a child needs to be to sit without a car seat. The lap belt should be riding on the hips and not the stomach while the shoulder belt should be contacting the actual shoulder rather than the neck. Having test more than 5000 students, studies have found that in many cases the kids still need some sort of booster seat for safety.
