Its car seat safety week and Stephanie Tombrello of Safety Belt Safe USA is on hand to give us some information and guidance on the different types of car seats that are available. The 4 major categories of safety seats include: rear facing, convertible, combination, and booster.
Rear facing seats are for the infant on up to 40 lbs as long as the head is below the top. Another alternative which can be used from birth on is the convertible seat which should be used in the rear facing position only. You should keep your child in a rear facing seat at least until age 2 and up to age 4. Convertible car seats can also be made to face the front of the car. Another category for forward facing only is the combination car seat. The combination can turn into a booster seat that uses the lap belt. Finally the booster seat protects the child from a shoulder lap belt that is made for taller passengers.
