Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hopes a new "safe zone" in northeast Syria will allow for the repatriation of Syrian refugees. Erdogan says he is determined to establish the so-called "safe zone" by the end of September. Last week, he told the UN General Assembly that as many as three million refugees could be moved to the proposed zone. This comes as resentment against Syrians in Turkey has increased, and a Russian-backed Syrian offensive on Idlib -- the last anti-Assad bastion -- has sent hundreds of thousands more refugees fleeing toward the Turkish border. While Ankara pushes for voluntary resettlement of Syrians living in Turkey, migrants and their advocates say authorities have rounded up hundreds of Syrians in recent months and some are already being deported back home to areas which they say are far from safe.
