The Giant's Causeway in northern Ireland was created by ancient volcanic eruption over fifty million years ago.

The terrain is made up of over forty thousand basalt columns.

The columns formed by a slow cooling lava range in shape but are mostly hexagonal.

Legend says that the Causeway was created by a mythical giant as a bridge to Scotland.

Notable features include the chimney stacks created by thousands of years of weathering and disintegration.

The Causeway became a UNESCO Heritage site in 1986 though it has been popular since the 19th century.

The columns rising from the ocean up the cliffs look particularly beautiful at sunset.
