A local phrase aptly says, "The mountain is a Buddha and the Buddha is a mountain."

The Leshan giant Buddha is an imposing figure, enthroned in a sheer cliff face.

The statue was built in the 8th century to calm the waters flowing past it's feet.

Even seated, this is the largest Buddha statue in the world and is 223 feet tall.

The designer, Hai Tong, built in an inventive drainage system that keeps the statue from eroding.

Visitors can see the Leshan Buddha from the base, or climb to a platform at ear level.
