Supporters of the opposition in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been celebrating after their candidate Felix Tshisekedi was declared the winner of the presidential election. Tshisekedi was not expected to win – but the electoral commission says he received 38 percent of the vote. If the result is confirmed, it will be the country’s first democratic transfer of power since independence in 1960. But runner-up Martin Fayulu has denounced the outcome as an electoral coup. France is also questioning the result.
