Many Rohingya women were raped as they escaped massacres in Myanmar, their bodies becoming part of the terrain of conflict. AJ+ interviewed Shafika while she was eight months pregnant in 2018. When she fled her village in Rakhine State along with her husband and young children in the dead of night, she was attacked – and she says her pregnancy was the result of being raped by the military.

No one knows how many Rohingya rape survivors have given birth. But in early 2018, the UN said 2,700 survivors of sexual- and gender-based violence have received humanitarian help in the camps.

This is Shafika's story.
