The Maldives, a low-lying archipelago in the Indian Ocean, faces an uncertain future. Rising sea levels threaten to wipe out this tiny island nation. As the water rises, researchers are using nature to help keep the Maldives from disappearing. They are rebuilding the reef that protects the islands and may keep the Maldives from disappearing into the ocean. On Baa Atoll, the Marine Discovery Centre led by biologist Sebastien Stradal fights to save sea turtles caught and threatened by ghost nets left behind by fishing fleets. The Maldives is also the world epicentre of manta ray research. Marine biologists with The Maldivian Manta Ray Project work to uncover the complex behaviours of these majestic creatures.
