Cabo Pulmo, a tiny ocean community on the shores of Mexico’s Sea of Cortez, is home to an extraordinary story of marine recovery. By the mid-1980s, this near-pristine coral reef was all but wiped out – decimated by reckless overfishing. That is, until those same fishermen abandoned their way of life and fought to save what Jacques Cousteau once called ‘the aquarium of the world.’ Today, dazzling schools of fish once again decorate the reef and the ocean’s supreme predators, sharks, ply these waters once more. One of the world’s most successful marine reserves, Cabo Pulmo is now a model for other marine-protected areas around the world.
