Palau, a remote island chain near the equator, is renowned for its rich reef ecosystems and majestic manta rays, which glide through its azure waters. The U.K.-based Manta Trust studies these rays to monitor their populations in relation to illegal fishing and tourism impacts. While smaller than their oceanic relatives, Palau's reef mantas can reach an impressive 11-foot wingspan and weigh over three thousand pounds. Dominating the region is the two-million-year-old barrier reef, the largest living structure on Earth, but it faces threats from ocean acidification due to rising carbon dioxide emissions, which hinder marine organisms' ability to form skeletons. Some reefs are younger, dating back to World War II, when shipwrecks became artificial reefs that support diverse marine life. Additionally, Jellyfish Lake, one of the seven underwater wonders of the world, features millions of jellyfish that migrate daily to nourish the algae within their bodies, creating a stunning natural spectacle.
