New Music, New Instruments: Scott Stevenson & Dr. Andrew Staniland at TEDxStJohns

Scott Stevenson's work is focused on developing interactive audio technology. Most recently, he has been working with composer Andrew Staniland to develop the Arc, a novel instrument designed for the performance of electronic music. He is also currently developing Scape, a platform for creating location-based audio on the iPhone. In 2011 he interned at Electronic Arts, working with their audio technology team to develop sound authoring software for video games. Scott is a recent computer engineering graduate and a music production hobbyist.

Composer Andrew Staniland has firmly established himself as one of Canada's most innovative musical voices. Described by Alex Ross in the New Yorker magazine as "alternately beautiful and terrifying", his music is regularly heard on CBC Radio 2 and has been performed and broadcast internationally in over 35 countries.

Andrew is the recipient of the 2009 National Grand Prize in EVOLUTION, top prizes in the SOCAN young composers competition, and the 2004 Karen Keiser Prize in Cana- dian Music. Andrew has been Affiliate Composer to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and has also been in residence at the Centre du Creation Musicale Iannis Xenakis. Andrew is currently on faculty at Memorial Univer- sity in St John's Newfoundland.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
