May or Might? May and Might are both modal auxiliary verbs which are always used with a base verb. Both might and may can also be used to express possibility and probability.

MAY!
May is used in two main ways:
1) May is used for asking permission: May I open the window? May I please have another piece of cake?
2) May is also used for expressing the possibility or probability of something happening in the future: We may go to England on our next vacation. Tom may not join us.*Note: This English grammar lesson will also explain the differences between the commonly confused words ‘maybe’ and ‘may be’. Maybe and may be have the same meaning, but are used in sentences differently! It may be too cold vs Maybe it will be too cold.

MIGHT
Might is used in two main ways:
1) Might is used for expressing the possibility or probability of something happening in the future. In Canada might is more commonly used than ‘may’ for this purpose: Tom might not join us. If you hurry, you might catch the next bus.
2) Might is also used to express past possibility. It helps to describe something that could have happened in the past. When used this way it is always together with the verb ‘have’ = might have / might’ve: He might have become a famous singer if he hadn’t given up on his dream. My mom might’ve called me, but my cellphone died so I don’t know.
