On November 11th every year, Canadians celebrate a special day called Remembrance Day. It is a time to reflect on the sacrifices that were made by soldiers who fought in various wars for freedom and to keep Canada safe. In today’s English lesson you will learn about this important Canadian event while improving your English vocabulary. You will also learn about a Canadian poem that is recited at Remembrance Day ceremonies in Canada. Remembrance Day is especially important to me because my father was a veteran who fought in WW2.

Some of the vocabulary and English expressions that you will explore in this lesson include:
Remembrance Day, Soldiers, Veterans, Honour, Fighting, War, Sacrifice, November 11th, Poppy / Poppies, Ceremony, Recite, Larks, Scarcely, Dawn, Dusk, Quarrel, Foe, Ye, Moment of silence, Reflect, etc.

The Remembrance Day poem that is included in this lesson is called “In Flanders Fields” and was written by Canadian solider John McCrae during WW1 in 1915. The poem is as follows:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

By the end of today’s English lesson you will have learned about Remembrance Day in Canada, and you will have learned some useful vocabulary to sound more like a native English speaker. Thank you for watching, “Learn about Remembrance Day in Canada and Improve your English Vocabulary!” I hope this vocabulary lesson will be useful for you as you improve your English.
