After air, food, and water, sleep is one thing that we humans need to survive. Often, people refer to quality of sleep as how long and how deep your sleep was, but in most instances, how you lay in bed may be even more important. When it comes to sleeping positions, there are few ways that we can lay down and sleep; mostly on our stomach, back, left side, and right side, etc. Studies have shown that how you sleep affects your health and mood, and that the most comfortable positions are not always the healthiest of sleeping positions.
There is one thing that most experts agree on when it comes to sleeping positions, and that is, that your sleeping position can affective your over-all health, either positively or negatively. Pregnant women after their first trimester have been advised not to sleep on their back because it could interfere with the flow of nutrients and blood to the placenta. For those who have asthma, or suffer from sleep apnea, sleeping on your back can be very dangerous. Though some people can comfortably sleep on their back without visible side effects, however, sleeping on your back is not the safest and healthiest way to sleep.
If you’re always constipated, bloated, or have frequent heartburn, it could be as a result of your sleeping position. If you suffer from any or all of the above, chances are that you sleep on your right side. When you sleep on your right side, your digestive system suffers, making it hard for you to properly digest food. The position of major organs in the body is located on the left side of the body, including our digestive system, so laying on your right side, in a sense, would amount to defying gravity, because the large intestine is located on the left side of the body, one good reason laying on your right side is bad for digestion.
