An easy way to think about polish is like lotion for your skin. The job of a polish is to create a high-gloss looks prior to the waxing step. If you have a dark colored car then a polish prior to waxing is a recommended step. But this is an optional step if you have a very light color car. Polish really shines on dark vehicles.
