Ijok is a small "cowboy town" of the main road going north of Kuala Lumpur in the district of Kuala Selangor. With just a small population of around 20,000 residents, this town was established at the turn of the 1900 century. Today many land banks and estates in Ijok have been transformed into housing projects and industrial plots. But if you look deeper you will discover some interesting cottage industries still surviving perfectly. Besides being famous for its "beggar chicken" Ijok has a "black gold” cottage industry too ! It's roasted coffee beans !
This video shows a small 3rd generation Hainanese family, one of the last surviving roasted coffee producers here, roasting fresh imported coffee beans, the traditional way for over 50 years, using plain rubber wood ! See how the white creamy beans are transformed into "black gold" in this video. The beans are stirred and roasted for hours, depending on flavour, with a mixture of sesame, margarine, salt and sugar. The strong fresh coffee aroma steaming from roasted beans can be sensed all over !
While the strong coffee aroma lingers in the air, there is opportunity for this cottage industry heritage to modernize and advance forward with technology and marketing, hence putting this cowboy town into the limelight. .
