In today’s English lesson you will improve your English by learning what a compound noun is, what the 3 types of compound nouns are with many compound noun examples, and an important pronunciation tip for compound nouns!

[*Remember: A Noun is a person, place, animal, or thing. A compound noun is a noun that is made up of two or more words combined to create a new unique noun with a specific meaning. Understanding compound nouns will help you to increase your English skills and English comprehension.]

In this English grammar lesson you will learn the 3 Types of compound nouns which are closed form compound nouns, hyphenated compound nouns and open form compound nouns:
1. Closed form compound nouns are created by directly joining two or more words together to create a new unique noun. Ex: Notebook, Baseball, Cellphone, Newspaper.
2. Hyphenated compound nouns are made by joining two or more words together with a hyphen to make a new noun. Ex: Mother-in-law, Two-year-old, Dry-cleaning, Merry-go-round.
3. Open form compound nouns are created by putting two or more words together with a space between them to create a new concept with a specific meaning. Ex: Ice cream, High school, Real estate, First aid.

[*Pronunciation Tip: When you are using compound nouns in speaking, make sure you emphasize / stress the first word in your compound word. EX: Sunglasses = SUNglasses, NOT sunGLASSES. (Make sure you watch the video for more examples and a more detailed explanation) ]
