Hey guys Bill here - in this series we have covered all sorts of monstrous looking fish -- from the black Piranha, to the giant anaconda -and a lot of other stuff in between, but today I’m heading out from the Ecolodge Da Barra with master Amazon angler Steve Townson, who says he has something a little different to show us.

STEVE: I’m going to take you today, to show you how to fish for one of the most beautiful species in the Amazon. It’s call the Surubim or Shovelnose catfish. And these things get pretty big, up to about 50 pounds. I hope to show you something really really special.
The scientific name is Pseudoplatystoma. It is a genus of several South American catfish species of family Pimelodidae. The species are known by a number of different common names. They typically inhabit major rivers where they prefer the main channels and tend to stay at maximum depth, but some species can also be seen in lakes, flooded forests, and other freshwater habitats. They have robust bodies, and are important food fish.
I never thought of Amazon River Monsters as being beautiful - So this I gotta see
These catfish usually like to stay in deeper water but today, our guide Saba from the Ecolodge Da Barra has spotted some in the shallows. It doesn’t take long before Steve has one on the hook.
This fish is going to be too big to pull onto the boat so Saba moves Steve to where they can land the on the beach.
Steve is going to release the fish as soon as we get a good look at him.
Thanks Steve you were right - that is a beautiful fish! And probably the one all those scary looking ones want to get a date with. It just goes to show you what an amazing place the amazon is.
And speaking of amazing places, I want to thank our good friend Roberto and Ecolodge Da Barra who took care of us during our latest Amazon River Monsters episode.
And guess what, I have three ecolodge da barra hats to give away… These are really cool and look good on boys and girls, so everybody is a winner if you get one… They are the official hats of the Ecolodge da Barra and not easy to come by… trust me…
Now all you have to do to win one of these is be the first three commenters to tell me the name of the three rivers that converge right there where the lodge is located.
Good luck!
