Here are 5 news stories from around the world 100 years ago.
What was happening in the world one hundred years ago? Hi this is Matt and here are 5 New York Times headlines from April 18th, 1913.
Number 5. A team of Bellevue doctors inadvertently discovered yet another thing that tastes just like chicken -- unborn calf, or at least a really young one. After the lot of them became ill following a lunch of chicken salad, they deduced the meat was bob veal.
Number 4. New York City's population jumped the 5 million mark. One hundred years later it hovers around 8 million. One hundred years before it was approximately 70 thousand.
Number 3. The Victor Victrola record player was a new must-have toy. The players may be hard to come by now, but you can pick up an original one like this one for about 15 dollars.
Number 2. A hit and run victim was given an instant opportunity to confront the driver. Police jumped in a cab, stopped the horse and buggy operator not too far away, and brought him back to the scene. They made peace and the driver gave the victim a ride home.
Number 1. Elevator occupants complained that they were sick of nearly getting their eyes poked out by fashionistas' oversized hatpins and threatened to sue. Lucky for them they likely weren't around to witness the 80's punk movement.
