Day 10 in the Science Behind the 12 Explosions of Christmas is 10 stockings spontaneously combusting!

This time, Greg Foot and Mike Sansom use the fire triangle again, to put their Christmas stockings in flames! (After they took the presents out of them!)

In this explosion, potassium chlorate provides the oxygen, the stocking material is the fuel, and the reaction between potassium chlorate and concentrated sulphuric acid creates the heat to finish off the triangle.

How do the guys pull it off? Well, the stockings were soaked in water and potassium chlorate, hung out, and then they fired concentrated sulphuric acid at the stockings with water pistols. As you do.

It has to be said this is one of the most dangerous explosions of Christmas, please don't try this at home!
