Location:
An unusual stall along Magazine Road in George Town selling traditional Teo Chew style porridge is always a site to behold. This stall has been around for over 70 years and the regular old folks from around here know what they are in for. Definitely good old Teo Chew style porridge with a wide buffet selection of dishes, and the unique way to sit! This video shows how the customers don't sit on the long benches there but rather sit on small double-stacked short wooden stools placed on top of the bench and squat for their food! This style of sitting dates back decades where in China the Teo Chews were short in height and preferred low wooden stools to sit on while eating. Times have changed and nowadays they are taller, but this tradition lives on right here! Indeed, it is a living heritage in a heritage city. Come see this unique site, try the traditional Teo Chew porridge, join the unassuming squatters and absorb a piece of living history right before your eyes.
